Acting on a tip-off, officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABoC) yesterday arrested three Customs officers while they were allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs 125 million at a location in Panchikawatte.

Director General of CIABoC and President’s Counsel Dilrukshi Dias Wickremesinghe told The Island last night that the raid was the biggest ever in the history of the Commission and it had been a difficult task until the last moment.

The DG identified the suspects as Customs Superintendent Sudeera Prarakrama Jinadasa, Deputy Superintendent Jagath Gunathilaka and Assistant Superintendent N.D.U.G. Perera.

She said that the complainant rang up the hot line 1954 and informed them that some Customs officers had demanded a bribe of Rs. 125 million after a post audit he had to pay the Customs Levy as much as Rs. 1,500 million.

"It was a historic day for us," she said.

Mrs. Wickremesinghe last night said that the operation would continue until others involved in the sordid operation were arrested.

The top official identified the complainant as a suppler to the Sri Lanka Transport Board. The suspects had initially demanded Rs. 150 million. The persons arrested so far had been attached to a special unit tasked with auditing of released consignment.
